Fear the Walking Dead has been renewed for a sixth season. Another season is welcome news for fans of the AMC series, but not necessarily surprising, considering AMC’s commitment to keeping The Walking Dead TV universe going for years to come.
Fear the Walking Dead is currently on its fifth season, and will air its midseason finale on Sunday. Season 5 continues where season 4 left off with Morgan (Lennie James) and the sole surviving member of the Clarke family, Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), leading a group of survivors on a mission to help people in need. Near the beginning of the season, Dwight (Austin Amelio), who exited The Walking Dead at the end of season 8, joined the cast of Fear the Walking Dead as the show’s second crossover character.
During the Fear the Walking Dead panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, it was confirmed that the series would be back for a sixth season. Also, a trailer for the second half of the season was previewed. It was announced that Colby Minifie (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Peter Jacobson (House, Colony), and Colby Hollman would be joining the cast, presumably when the series returns.
In discussing the show’s return and the continuation of the Walking Dead universe, chief content officer Scott M. Gimple talked about Fear the Walking Dead being renewed for season 6 and went on to discuss other plans to build on the universe, such as the third Walking Dead TV series, which is currently in development.
AMC has made it clear in the past that the network is committed to keeping The Walking Dead alive, which of course includes its sister series. The future of the show has been in doubt for some, considering how far The Walking Dead has dropped in the ratings. However, it’s interesting to note that Fear the Walking Dead’s situation isn’t quite the same. While it’s true that Fear the Walking Dead’s viewership has gone down, it’s happening at a much steadier rate than the main series.
This news is certainly satisfying for fans of Fear the Walking Dead, who want to the see AMC series have a long life. The show, which recently aired an episode filled with connections to Rick Grimes’ fate and the upcoming Walking Dead movies, features a growing cast of characters as they all work toward helping people and getting through the apocalypse together.
